Science Art group "18 apples" is engaged in art projects on the edge of contemporary science and technology. In the run up to
Ars Electronica festival the team needed a stylized design of protective case for their project called Metabol.A.I. — a DIY
3D bio-printer, that uses a living cells as its' printing material,
and is operated by a neural network program which is generating biomorphic pattern for printing using as its' source a database with million images of real cells of different shapes and formations.
Sketching
At this stage of concept development we tried to implement all terms of reference given to the case: usability of the key parts, materials that are easy to keep clean with laboratory sterilants, and of course futuristic outlook, allusive to those living substances created inside. While generating ideas we looked for inspiration in sci-fi movies and bionic shapes of different kinds of protist organisms.
